The Indian armed forces have commissioned a third regiment of BrahMos missiles – a joint Russian-Indian development, RIA Novosti learned on Thursday from a source in the Ministry of Defense of India.
The land forces of India test-fired an improved version (block-3) of the BrahMos missile, which has the ability to make steep dives. The launch took place from the Car Nicobar Island of the Nicobar Islands Archipelago at about 11:00 a.m. (8:30 MSK), from an autonomous mobile launcher.
“The missile followed a predetermined trajectory and successfully hit its intended target on Trak Island (Nicobar Archipelago), located at a remote distance,” the source told RIA Novosti.
Established jointly by the Russian Federation and India, the supersonic BrahMos cruise missile began to enter the Armed Forces of India in 2005. The missile has a range of 290 kilometers, and is capable of carrying a warhead weighing up to 300 kilograms. Having already successfully passed its land and sea tests, now the missile is being adapted for future arming of the Su-30MKI fighter jet.
