The Navy will build a fully equipped naval base on the Porbandar coast
in an effort to increase security along the 1600-km-long Gujarat coast
and beyond in Maharashtra and Goa. The new base will be named after
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, sources said.
The Navy's decision was communicated to Gujarat chief minister Anandiben Patel by Rear Admiral Ashok Kumar who met the former here on Wednesday. The discussion between Kumar and the chief minister covered a host of security-related issues and the Navy's operations in Gujarat.
The rear admiral discussed the Navy's future plans along the Gujarat coast, including plans for infrastructure facilities and a jetty. Sources said the chief minister asked him to help the Gujarat police improve their skills in marine policing. She also discussed the safety of Gujarati fishermen who are often caught by Pakistani marines near the international maritime border.
