(RIA Novosti) : Russia’s Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov signed a contract with the United Shipbuilding Corporation on Wednesday for construction of new Yasen and Borey class submarines.
Prime Minister Vladimir Putin was present at the signing ceremony.
The Defense Ministry signed a contract with the St Peterburg-based Malakit shipbuilder for construction of a Project 885 Yasen class attack submarine at the Sevmash shipyard in Severodvinsk. The Yasen class is a replacement for the navy’s Akula-class attack boats.
Another deal was signed with the Rubin design bureau for construction of a Borey class (Project 955A) ballistic-missile submarine. The Borey will replace the navy’s ageing Delta class ballistic missile boats.
A contract was also signed with the Admiralty Verf shipyard for construction of a Project 21300 rescue vessel. The value of all the contracts was not disclosed.
