GRSE lays keel for Indian Navy’s second Project 17A frigate

Indian state-owned shipyard Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) has begun work on the second of seven indigenously designed Shivalik II (Project 17A [P17A])-class stealth frigates on order for the Indian Navy (IN).

A keel-laying ceremony for the vessel, which is the first of three ships of the class set to be built by the shipyard, was held on 10 November at GRSE's facilities in Kolkata.

A second shipyard, Mumbai-based Mazagaon Dock Shipbuilder Limited (MDL), began building the first of these multimission frigates in 2017, and is expected to build an additional three.

The contract for the construction of the seven Project 17A vessels was signed in February 2015.
