RISING TENSIONS

Tensions between India and its northern neighbour China have risen since General Bipin Rawat's comment last week. Army chief General Bipin Rawat said last week that India should shift its focus from its western border with Pakistan to its northern border with China.

Following the comment, China expressed anger on Monday stating that such comments may hurt peace and tranquility.

"....the unconstructive remarks by the Indian senior officials not only go against the consensus reached by the two heads of state, and do not conform to the efforts made by the two sides to improve and develop bilateral relations. It cannot help to preserve tranquillity and peace in the border areas," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang said in a statement.

Rawat also pointed out that the Doklam standoff ended due to the onset of winters and Chinese troops might return.
