President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have pledged that the US and India should have the world's greatest militaries as they discussed bilateral strategic partnership and their shared commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
Though he denied that the new U.S. foreign policy has something to do with containing China's rise, it is a well-understood fact that Trump seeks India's friendship in the region as in today's era it considers the communist nation a political, security an economic threat to it.
The two leaders also discussed their shared commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific region, a day after officials from India, Australia, Japan and the U.S. held talks to formalise a quadrilateral alliance.
"The relations between India and the U.S. are growing, and I also feel that the relationship between India and the U.S. is not only for mutual interest".
Modi's remarks reflected the growing convergence on strategic issues between the two sides at a time when the Quad, which is being seen a counter-balance to China, has increased efforts aimed at keeping the Indo-Pacific region free, open and inclusive.
Earlier the US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson had said the Trump administration was considering India as a strategic partner which is not specific to the region.
While unveiling his new Afghanistan strategy in August, Trump had said that with India "we are committed to pursuing our shared objectives for peace and security in South Asia and the broader Indo-Pacific region".

Hailing India as "the largest democracy in the world", Trump said, "Since India opened its economy, it has achieved astounding growth and a new world of opportunity for its expanding middle class".
