Now, focus on hypersonic version of BrahMos

As the supersonic version of BrahMos had been flight tested for variety of manoeuvres, both for the Army and Navy, the focus would be now on developing hypersonic version of BrahMos, A. Sivathanu Pillai, former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Managing Director (MD) of BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited, has said.

Talking to reporters at Rameswaram and here after launching the renovation of ‘Ramar Theertham,’ a holy waterbody in the island, he said BrahMos was the fastest supersonic missile in the world jointly developed by India and Russia and had been handed over to the Indian Army.

The “Indian Army is the only land force in the world to use the supersonic cruise missile and now the focus will be to develop the hypersonic version of the missile,” Mr. Pillai, whose extended term as CEO and MD of BrahMos Aerospace ended on July 31, said.

After developing the supersonic version for the Army and Navy, orders for the missiles had been received from many ships and regiments, he said. The Air Force had also placed orders, he said adding “now, it is the question of production and delivery (of the missiles) and we have to think of the next programme, hypersonic,” he said.

Replying to a question, Mr. Pillai said the flight test of BrahMos from Sukhoi M 30 Mark I was yet to be done, though it was originally scheduled for December. The missile had already been integrated with the aircraft and “further work is being done and there are so many things to be done,” he said but declined to go into details.
