Navy to commission two ships next month

The Navy will commission two indigenously-built warships, guided-missile destroyer INS Kolkata and anti-submarine warfare corvette INS Kamorta, next month.

While the Navy has got possession of the 6,800-tonne destroyer, INS Kamorta will be handed over to the force by GRSE (Kolkata) on Saturday. The long-delayed construction of three destroyers, of which INS Kolkata is the first, is being undertaken by Mazagon Docks at a cost of Rs 11,662 crore. GRSE, in turn, is building four corvettes for Rs 7,852 crore.

As part of the endeavour to steadily build a three-dimensional blue-water Navy capable of taking care of India's huge strategic interests in the region stretching from the Persian Gulf to the Malacca Strait, there are 42 warships currently on order in Indian shipyards at a cost of over Rs 2 lakh crore after the construction of INS Kolkata and INS Kamorta.  -  Times of india
