(Forbes) : While much of the world’s attention has been focused on Libya and Japan in recent days, prospective U.S. presidential candidate Sarah Palin was in India. In New Delhi, Palin weighed in on China’s defense spending, a source of anxiety in Asia because of the country’s increasingly assertive claims of sovereignity in the region.
”What’s with the military buildup?” she said before a well-heeled group, according to a dispatch by the Associated press. ”China’s military growth can’t just be for defensive purposes,” she added. “Free people that make up a free country don’t wage war on another free country,” she also said, in another apparent jab at China’s Communist government.
China doesn’t hide the direction of its military buildup, having said that it will increase military spending by 12.7% to $91 billion this year, up from a 7.5% increase last year. Many military experts outside of China say the government understates the true figure.
